The Access Group have released an exclusive guide for charities offering a better understanding of Gift Aid, and how to make the most of it.
Gift Aid is a powerful tool for UK charities which provides an additional income that can help them fund their vital work.
What is Gift Aid?
Launched in 1990,
Gift Aid is a
tax relief scheme from the UK Government which allows charities to reclaim an extra 25% in tax on every eligible donation made by a taxpayer:
If a donor gave £100 to a charity and is a taxpayer in the UK, that charity can claim an extra £25 on that donation to make the total gift worth £125.
This makes Gift Aid a simple and effective way to increase the value of donations to a charity.
The idea behind Gift Aid is that people usually make donations from their income, which has already been taxed. So a charity could then take that donation and, if the donor had agreed to Gift Aid, could claim their basic rate of tax (20%) back from
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
Granted, 25p might not sound like a lot, but every donation adds up: It’s been reported that up until 2015, the scheme had
generated around £60 Billion for charities, and the Sector has received an
average of £1.4 Billion from Gift Aid donations every year
since.
However, charities are still missing out on nearly £600 Million in unclaimed Gift Aid every year, and that’s available money which charities could make the most of to mobilise their good cause.
